This Lapsang Souchong originates from Fujian province in China. Lapsang Souchong: the Chinese tea that some describe as the best drink in the tea world. It has hints of whiskey, tobacco and campfire smoke. It gives a very different view of black tea. Lapsang Souchong enhances the tea experience with innovative flavors within centuries-old traditional black tea. The method of production of Lapsang Souchong is unique because the leaves are dried by smoking and not by oxidation as usual. The production process of Lapsang Souchong has been around for thousands of years. Legend has it that there was a backlog within the tea factory due to a raid by soldiers and they wanted to make up the production backlog by lighting a fire to dry the leaves faster. Today, Lapsang Souchong tea is produced exactly as it was then. The leaves are first harvested from the Camellia sinensis tea bush, usually two or three layers of the flower buds. These tea leaves are coarser and have fewer aromatic notes than leaves closer to the bud. This also gives the tea producer the opportunity to produce tea from leaves that would otherwise remain unused. The fresh leaves are then placed in a bamboo basket to wither over a cypress or pine wood fire. The leaves are then placed in barrels where they further develop smoked flavors. To end the oxidation process, the black tea leaves are placed again in flat bamboo baskets and further roasted over the smoky pine fires, which give a final unique touch to the Lapsang Souchong. The process results in a finished tea that is thick and black in color.
Lapsang Souchong is a sublime choice if you are looking for a black tea that is bolder than the traditional English breakfast and Earl Grey tea. This smoky tea is best suited for people who like bold flavors. From the moment you open the bag, the aroma evokes memories of summer campfires and winter evenings by the wood stove. Add boiling water and the amber drink will begin to stimulate your senses.
